Fiddleheads: An Unfurling Symphony

Some fiddleheads are edible, some are not. The embryonic ferns are starting to unfold in woodlands and rich earth near streams and rivers. For those who love the delicacy, check food markets in your area for availability.

The edible type is ostrich fern. The University of Maine Cooperative Extension Bulletin 4198 is available online and lists facts, recipes, and tidbits of information about fiddleheads.
